CASH OR DONATION?

When you bring recyclables to the Recycling Center you have several options you can choose from because we are a “buy back center”.  The materials that we pay for are:  newspaper; #1 and #2 plastics; aluminum cans, foil and baking dishes; office paper; and corrugated boxes (but not paperboard packaging).

If you want to receive cash for your recyclables, be sure that your materials are separated by category and free from any contaminants.  In other words, there should be only aluminum in with your aluminum, #1 and/or #2 plastics in with your plastic, etc.

Then, all you do is tell the “door guy” that you want cash and he will weigh each individual item, and give you a cash ticket.  Take that ticket to the Cashier Window to receive payment.  Remember – it is still important to bring all your other recyclables in the same trip, even if they are not items we pay for.  This way you will be

1)     reducing your garbage

2)     keeping the stuff  out of the landfill, and

3)     providing the raw materials companies need to make new products and keep the recycling industry strong.

Businesses can receive cash or set up an account and receive checks monthly for their delivered recyclables.  The same standards apply to their materials – sorted and free from contaminants.  The Center has a truck scale available for large loads.  Just drive up on the scale, ring the bell and the Cashier will ask you who you are and what you have and then  record your full weight.  You will then be instructed as to where to go unload your recyclables.  After dumping your load, drive back around to the scale and the Cashier will weigh you out and generate a ticket.  If you want cash, come to the Cashier Window to get it.  If credit goes to your business account, you don’t need to come to the window.  We have the scale ticket for each trip the business makes. Checks are written and sent out at the end of each month for all materials that we pay for that have been brought in that month.

Recycling is a great way to earn money your favorite charitable or non profit organization.  Non profit organizations are paid quarterly for the materials brought to the Center and donated to their account.  The recycling Center has over 300 charitable and non profit organizations on file.  If your favorite one is not listed, it is easy to open an account – just call or come to the Office and give us the organization’s name, contact person, address and phone number.  Then be sure to let everyone in the organization know that you have an account at the Recycling Center and encourage them to bring their recyclables to the Center as a fund raiser.  We will be happy to provide you with handouts for everyone in your group, arrange for a speaker to come to one of your meetings to explain the program and promote recycling as a fundraiser as well as the environmentally appropriate way to handle waste, or even arrange a tour through the facility for your group.  Remember that in order for your recyclables to be credited to any account, they must be sorted by material and free from contaminants.  Just tell the “door guys” that you want it donated to “name of organization” and he will weigh the items and write a ticket with that organization’s name on it and give you a copy.  At the end of each quarter, we total all those tickets and send a check to the group.  We recommend that you wait the couple of minutes it takes to get your ticket so you will have a receipt for proof of activity as well as tax credit.

Finally, if you just want to drop off your recyclables, either during open hours or after hours, know that those materials help support the Recycling Center.  By not having the expense of paying for your recyclables, the Center is able to lower its operating costs.

But whatever you do – please do your part by Recycling especially during the holidays – either at the Recycling Center, at the Curb or at one of Floyd County’s 6 remote collection sites.  For more information, visit our web site at www.romefloydrecycles.org.
