EVENT RECYCLING – LET’S DO MORE OF IT!

Collecting recyclables at special events not only reinforces recycling as an assumed part of every facet of our lives, but also gives charitable and non-profit groups another avenue of fund raising. Here is how it can work for you.

The Recycling Center has a quantity of easy to use recycling collection containers that are available for use to any charitable or non-profit group for their special events. These bins can also be used for business and social events. These “X-Stream” containers are basically a steel collapsible frame with clear bags and a plastic top with labeled holes for bottles and cans. They are easy to transport, attractive and convenient to use. As with any other type of recycling program, it is always best to place your recycling containers right next to your trash containers so people can easily put recyclables in one and trash in the other without having to make extra trips. The bags are crystal clear and are labeled “Recyclables Only” with a large recycling triangle on it so it is easy to see that only recyclables should go into them. We will provide the bags with the containers for your event.

As for the fundraising part – the Rome/Floyd Recycling Center is a buy back center and we do pay for both plastic drink bottles (water and soft drinks) and aluminum cans. If the materials are separated we pay $.01 per pound for the plastic bottles and $.25 per pound for the aluminum cans. However, in order to help promote recycling at community events and make it as easy as possible to collect recyclables, you could collect both bottles and cans in each container and we will pay $.10 per pound for this combination. Now that Summer is here, there will be lots of drinks consumed at these events and if they can be captured in the recycling stream, everyone benefits. They stay out of the landfill, they raise money for your group and they provide feedstock for the plastic and aluminum industry to make new products.

If you would be interested in adding the recycling component to your gatherings, please let us know. Just call the Recycling Center at 706/291-5266 and ask for Marta or Dawn. Tell us when your event is scheduled, how many containers you would like to use and we will reserve them for you on a first come first served basis. You will need to make arrangements to have the containers picked up – they easily fit in trunks or back seats – and then bring them back to the Recycling Center along with the bags of collected recyclables. We will then weight your bags and pay you right then for the bottles and cans or credit it to your charitable, non-profit organization. Event recycling makes good sense, so include the concept in your planning sessions.
