         The previous articles have shown that too many recyclables are being discarded instead of recycled.  Now let’s talk about the ways that people can recycle those materials instead of continuing to throw them away.

City of Rome residents: Curbside recycling 1 time a week on the same day as your garbage pick up.  Curbside collects newspapers and magazines, paperboard and junk mail, glass bottles and jars,  #1 and #2 plastic bottles and jars, and steel and aluminum cans. Corrugated boxes are collected the 1st recycling day of the month for your route.  For more information call 706.236.4580.  In Floyd County you can recycle at one of 6 remote household garbage and recycling sites:  Berryhill – 434 Berryhill Rd (Huffacker & Technology Rd), Hatfield – 488 Jones Mill Rd (off Old Dalton Rd); Potts – 182 Potts Rd (between Wayside & Ward Mtn); and Shannon (beside Fire Sta in Shannon.  All OPEN TUES – SAT 7am – 7pm, SUN 11am – 7pm; Midway – Midway Park Rd (off Wax Rd) OPEN MON – SAT 7am – 7pm, SUN 11am – 7pm; Cave Spring – 101 King’s Bridge Rd.  OPEN TUES / THURS / SAT - 9am – 7pm, SUN  11am – 7pm  For more information call 706.236.2495.  All of these sites recycle corrugated boxes and paperboard, newspaper and magazines, glass bottles and jars, steel and aluminum cans.  Berryhill, Shannon and Midway also recycle #1 and #2 plastics.  Everyone can also recycle at Walker Mountain Landfill – 433 Walker Mtn Rd (off 27South) OPEN MON – FRI 8am – 4pm; SAT 8am – 2pm, CLOSED SUN. The Recycling Center – 405 Watters St (off Calhoun between Piggly Wiggly and Troy’s BBQ) is OPEN MON – FRI 8am – 3:30pm and SAT 8am – 2pm.  We have a drop off area open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the recyclables only.  We accept: aluminum cans, foil and baking dishes; steel cans; #1 and #2 plastic bottles and jars; glass bottles and jars; newspapers and magazines; office paper, junk mail, corrugated boxes and paperboard; phone books and soft and hardback books; paper and plastic bags; ink jet cartridges; cell phones; appliances and other scrap metals; Styrofoam food packaging.  For more information call 706.291.5266 or visit our website at www.romefloydrecycles.org.  

The Recycling Center also offers free pick up of corrugated boxes and office paper to all businesses in Rome and Floyd County.  If you are interested in diverting a large portion of your waste stream into a more productive, more cost effective and more environmentally responsible way, call the Recycling Center to arrange getting on our route.
