The 2007 Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day was held Saturday, April 14, 2007

2007 TOTALS

  • 28,095 pounds of electronics

  • 26,800 pounds of tires

  • 67,645 pounds of paint and related products

  • 1,500 gallons of oil - 100 gallons of antifreeze

  • approximately 9,000 pounds miscellaneous  poisons and other hazardous materials - pool chemicals, fluorescent bulbs, mercury, etc.

  • 4,300 pounds automotive batteries

  • 670 vehicles participated

TOTAL COST FOR SPONSORING THIS EVENT:  $34,804.29

Special Thanks to Georgia Power Company for their donation of almost $ 1,000 worth of safety supplies and Rome Braves management for letting us use the State Mutual Stadium lot!

Once a year the Recycling Center offers a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day for residents of Rome and Floyd County.  We encourage citizens to save their household hazardous wastes for this collection day to properly dispose of these old and leftover materials.

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTES  -  Do you really know what they are?

A product is considered hazardous when - it poses a threat to your health or the environment.

There are signal words to look for to help you quickly determine if the product you are using is hazardous. These words include:

DANGER    POISON    WARNING    CAUTION    IRRITANT    CAUSTIC    FLAMMABLE    COMBUSTIBLE    RADIOACTIVE    EXPLOSIVE

Many of the products we commonly use around the house, garage and garden are hazardous. Products like - drain cleaners, paints and varnishes, pool chemicals, fertilizers, pesticides - to name just a few.  For more comprehensive information on Household Hazardous Wastes see the websites listed below!.

Manufacturers are required by law to list the hazardous ingredients on the product labels along with safe use instructions and proper disposal methods.  It is important to always read the labels and follow the precautions for safe use and disposal.
